About Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex
viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).
Over 80% of recurring genital herpes is due to HSV-2. Type-specific serology
has been shown to be the best way to detect persons with subclinical or recurring
genital herpes.
The CDC recommends that at risk patients be offered type-specific serology tests
to accurately distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections.
Once HSV-2 is diagnosed by testing, therapy can suppress HSV-2, reduce painful
outbreaks, and decrease the risk of transmitting HSV-2 to a partner.
Testing and treatment may also reduce the risk of acquiring HIV or experiencing
HIV progression.
A type-specific gG-2 immunoassay kit is a leading aid in the diagnosis of
genital herpes. Only glycoprotein G (gG-2) based assays have been shown to be
accurate in detecting antibodies to HSV-2.
